Alabama community demands accountability for flood damage before Biden's term ends

Summary

Residents of Shiloh, Alabama, a majority-Black community, are seeking federal accountability for years of severe flooding linked to a highway expansion by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). Despite federal investigations and visits by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a Voluntary Resolution Agreement only addressed future flooding, leaving existing property damage unresolved. With President Biden’s term ending and concerns about support under a new administration, community leaders, including Timothy Williams and environmental justice pioneer Dr. Robert Bullard, have intensified advocacy efforts. They delivered a 5,000-signature petition to the U.S. Department of Transportation, demanding comprehensive reparations and long-term solutions to preserve Shiloh’s legacy.
