Apartment Buildings Wrap Up $1B in HUD Funds for Lower Utility Bills and Climate Upgrades

Summary

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) completed a $1 billion initiative to retrofit affordable housing, making properties more energy-efficient and climate-resilient. The Green and Resilient Retrofit Program, part of the Inflation Reduction Act, funded improvements like solar panels, energy-efficient appliances, and floodproofing in 270 properties across 42 states. Residents, such as low-income seniors in New Orleans and Pittsburgh, highlighted benefits like reduced utility bills, safer homes, and resilience against extreme weather. The retrofits aim to lower carbon emissions and utility costs, addressing climate change while preserving affordable housing. HUD plans to monitor and share the impact of these upgrades to guide future projects.
