Climate Change Made All of This Year’s Atlantic Hurricanes So Much Worse

A new analysis by Climate Central reveals that human-caused climate change intensified all 11 Atlantic hurricanes of 2024, increasing wind speeds by 9 to 28 mph. This boost elevated seven storms into higher categories, including two Category 5 hurricanes that would not have occurred without planetary warming. The study highlights the role of record-hot ocean temperatures, driven by climate change, in fueling these storms. Rapid intensification, like Hurricane Milton’s 90 mph wind increase in 24 hours, exacerbated risks, reducing preparation time for communities. Researchers suggest that hurricanes will grow even stronger as global warming continues, potentially requiring a revision of the Saffir-Simpson scale to include a Category 6.
