This Black Family Won’t Back Down After Court Allows Railroad to Take Their Land

Blaine and Diane Smith are appealing a Georgia court ruling that allows Sandersville Railroad Co. to seize their land under eminent domain. The proposed rail spur would cut through their family’s 600-acre property, which has been in their family since the 1920s. The Smiths and other Black landowners argue the project will disrupt their community and threaten their generational land ownership. The railroad claims the project benefits public trade and offers economic growth, but residents fear environmental and social consequences. The case is now headed to the Georgia Supreme Court as the Smiths continue their fight to protect their land.
