Video op-ed: Communities in a newly-revealed cancer cluster in Texas deserve justice

A recent cancer rate assessment has identified a 250-square-mile area along the San Jacinto River in Texas, including the San Jacinto River Waste Pits Superfund Site, as a cancer cluster. The waste pits, contaminated with carcinogenic dioxins and furans, were classified as a Superfund Site by the EPA in 2008. The region also sits within the Houston Ship Channel’s petrochemical corridor, further exposing residents to harmful pollutants. Jackie Medcalf, founder of the Texas Health and Environment Alliance (THEA), highlights the cumulative environmental injustices affecting Highlands, Texas, a community near the waste pits. THEA produced a video op-ed to raise awareness of the health risks tied to the area’s pollution. Environmental advocates are calling for stronger regulatory oversight and accountability for industrial contamination in the region.
