Bullard Center's Destiny Okonkwo Named 2024 HBCU Scholar by White House Initiative
Destiny Okonkwo, a senior at Texas Southern University and a 2023 Bullard Center HBCU Environmental Justice Climate Corps intern, has been named a 2024 HBCU Scholar by the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
In the summer of 2023, Okonkwo was part of a four-week internship program, led by TSU professor Dr. Robert Bullard and funded by the Macquarie Group. The program provided mentorship and training to address environmental and climate challenges affecting vulnerable communities. She currently leads the Environmental Conservation Organization (Club ECO), an on-campus student organization created by Okonkwo and other TSU summer interns to address environmental concerns on campus.
When asked about her selection for the White House Initiative, Okonkwo shared, "Out of the hundreds of students that applied for this program, being the only undergraduate selected from the illustrious Texas Southern University was a complete surprise and blessing! I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to represent Texas Southern University at HBCU Week this year and show the excellence in achievement that thrives within our institution."
Okonkwo is one of 110 students from 77 HBCUs recognized this year for their academic excellence, leadership, and community dedication. As an HBCU Scholar, she will participate in leadership development, networking opportunities, and a special partnership with NASA to develop innovative projects.
Reflecting on her preparation for HBCU Week, Okonkwo added, "This past summer we met with sponsors from NASA, engaged in pre-conference conversations, and explored career development opportunities."
The scholars will attend the 2024 HBCU Week National Annual Conference in Philadelphia this September.
