Report Reveals How HBCUs Can Leverage History to Fight Climate Change

Summary

Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are emerging as pivotal leaders in climate justice, according to a new report by the United Negro College Fund titled *The HBCU Climate Action Blueprint*. Situated in communities often disproportionately affected by environmental injustices, HBCUs have developed initiatives to address climate impacts through programs in renewable energy, student-led environmental groups, and community-driven sustainability projects. The report finds that 85% of HBCUs are already implementing green programs, supported by alliances with public and private sectors. Leveraging their unique position, HBCUs aim to drive climate action while addressing urgent needs within underserved communities.
