Community-led solutions, input, and creativity helps to create a more resilient Gulf Coast. A recent announcement from the Gulf Research Program (GRP) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine highlights a significant step in this direction, awarding over $1.43 million to projects in Houston, New Orleans, and Mobile.
"Weathering the Storm Together: A Community-Based Planning Initiative to Develop Mental Health Resources for Houston" is a project co-led by Dr. Robert Bullard and Dr. Denae King of the Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice, that aims to address the long-term mental health needs of communities that face the brunt of Gulf Coast storms.
With an award of $99,999, this initiative will focus on planning and developing resources specifically tailored to the Houston, TX region. Through collaborative efforts with community based organizations, Achieving Community Tasks Successfully (ACTS), and Northeast Houston Redevelopment Council (NEHRC), the Environmental Defense Fund and the University of Houston, the project will ensure the data outcomes are both science-based and community-driven.
