How Do You Save a Rainforest? Leave It Alone

New research suggests that allowing rainforests to regrow naturally could store significant carbon while restoring biodiversity. The study, published in *Nature*, estimates that 830,000 square miles of deforested tropical land could regrow independently, sequestering 23.4 gigatons of carbon over 30 years. Natural regrowth, especially near existing forests, encourages diverse ecosystems, with birds and animals helping to spread seeds and increase biodiversity. Researchers highlight that conserving these forests—especially in countries like Brazil, Indonesia, and Mexico—could be a powerful tool in climate strategy, but caution that changing climate conditions may impact regrowth. This approach is part of broader reforestation goals under initiatives like the Bonn Challenge.
